Title: Autumn Moon Over the Calm Lake
Performers: Vancouver Chinese Instrumental Music Society
Culture: Chinese
Instrumentation: Ruan, Zheng, Erhu
I picked this piece this week because it is important to expose your students to instruments from over the world that they may never see in real life. To young students, the only instruments they know are the typical instruments you find in a string orchestra, a concert band, and a rock band. While it's very unusual to have these instruments available to you in your classroom, the least you can do is show videos that utilize these instruments from all over.
I agree that it's important to expose your students from instruments all over the world. I think it would also be an interesting listening activity because if you asked them to identify the instruments, they might think of western instruments like violin and harp. Then you could talk about how the string family is extended way beyond violion, viola, cello, bass, and harp. This is a great piece!
ReplyDeleteWow! The exhibit I interpreted over the summer had an erhu hanging on display, but I never imagined it would sound like that! I never expected such a strong and confident sound to come out of such a small instrument.
ReplyDeleteKara, I definitely would have associated the sounds I am hearing with different instruments. The zheng proved capable of such a variety of sounds that I had to back up and watch it again to make certain that it was the same instrument.
I particularly enjoy that this music has some familiar sounds and even while played on very unfamiliar instruments, a Western ear can still understand the setting of the piece.
